Swvl Expands its Operations in Spain after Successfully Moving 240,000+ Passengers in Barcelona and Màlaga

Swvl expands its On-Demand Transit operation into Alhaurín el Grande after successfully moving 240,000+ Passengers with local Public Transit Operators (PTOs) in Màlaga and Barcelona.

Public Transport Operators (PTOs) are increasingly transforming their traditional fixed routes to On-Demand Transit with an aim to overcome the growing mobility challenges and provide daily commuters with the convenience of ride-hailing at nearly the cost of mass transit.

In Europe regions such as the metropolitan areas of Barcelona or Málaga in Spain, PTOs have long deployed Swvl’s On-Demand technology and managed to move 240,000+ passengers successfully. The operation was launched to help those who don’t have access to private vehicles or whose first and last-mile commuting needs are not met by traditional public transport.

In September, Swvl partnered with Barcelona’s PTO, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona ‘TMB’ in Torre Baró Sud/Vallbona. Torre Baró is an isolated neighborhood in complex hilly geography, which makes it difficult for traditional public transport to achieve optimal ride frequency and waiting times. However, after launching Swvl’s technology, ridership exceeded 600+ passengers in the first week alone.

This week will also see another launch for Swvl’s On-Demand Transit operations in Alhaurín el Grande, serving a population of 25,000+ citizens, which makes it PTO Avanza’s second operation in the province of Málaga following the success of connecting the scattered areas in the town of Cártama.

These two launches are two steps closer to more innovation, better accessibility, and greener mobility ecosystems.
